Florida School Crossing Guard Training Program
The Florida School Crossing Guard Training Program (FSCGTP) was established under the Ramon Turnquest School Crossing Guard Act to standardize training across the state. Administered by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), this program ensures that school crossing guards are properly trained to protect students and manage traffic hazards.
How It Works:
- Local agencies and law enforcement register trainers, who then certify school crossing guards.
- Training includes classroom instruction, practical training, and supervised duty.
- Trainers must pass a certification exam with at least 85%; crossing guards must pass with 75%.
- Annual recertification is required.
Requirements for Guards:
- Good physical condition, clear communication, and quick response ability.
- Must pass a background check and physical examination.
- Trained in accordance with FDOT guidelines.
Recognizing Excellence:
Each year, FDOT honors outstanding crossing guards and programs on Crossing Guard Appreciation Day (first Friday of February).
