Stay Safe: Understanding Florida’s Move Over Law
Florida’s Move Over law is designed to protect law enforcement, emergency responders, and roadside workers. The law requires drivers to move over a lane when passing stopped vehicles with flashing warning lights, including law enforcement, emergency, sanitation, utility service, tow trucks, maintenance vehicles, or any disabled vehicles. If moving over isn’t possible or safe, drivers must slow down by 20 mph below the posted speed limit, or to 5 mph when the speed limit is 20 mph or less.
This simple act can save lives, but many drivers remain unaware. Statistics show that drivers aged 20-40 are the most likely to violate the Move Over law. In 2022 alone, there were 170 crashes and over 14,000 citations issued for failing to move over, putting the safety of roadside workers and motorists at serious risk.
Violating the Move Over law can lead to fines, fees, and points on your driving record. Beyond the legal penalties, failing to move over endangers those working to keep our roads safe.
For more information, visit Section 316.126 of the Florida Statutes. Remember, the simple act of moving over or slowing down can make a big difference in ensuring safety on Florida’s roadways.
